Scent Work:
Unlock Your Dog’s Inner Detective

Scent Skills.

Scent skills at Paw & Order are all about tapping into what dogs do best -sniffing!

From simple nose games to more advanced detection, tracking, and trailing, this is where dogs get to use their natural instincts on a much bigger scale. It’s something we’re genuinely passionate about—and for many of our dogs, it quickly becomes a favourite.

We offer sessions for both enjoyment and progression. Whether you’re exploring scent for enrichment, working towards structured programmes like UK Scent Sport or Scentwork UK, or simply playing a well-earned game of hide and seek, there’s something here for every dog and handler team.

Alongside regular detection classes, we also run tracking and trailing sessions, as well as environmental searches—taking scent work into unusual settings such as museums, theatres, and other novel locations. These experiences help dogs learn to apply their skills in different environments, building confidence and adaptability along the way.

Scent work offers powerful mental enrichment, helping to build focus, confidence, and emotional balance. It encourages calm, purposeful behaviour and can be particularly beneficial for dogs who need an outlet for their energy without high physical impact.

Behind it all is a depth of experience and passion. Stacy is a United Canine Scent Sport accredited instructor, as well as a Scentwork UK instructor and trial manager, while Jennie is a NASDU-qualified drug detection dog handler and Scentwork UK judge…. so you’re in good hands.

Scent Detection

Scent detection is where many dogs begin their scent work journey.

We start with beginner sessions or one-to-one training, focusing on the foundations—teaching your dog how to search, build confidence, and understand the game. From there, we develop the teamwork between dog and handler, creating clear communication and a shared understanding of the task.

As skills progress, dogs learn to search for specific source odours such as Kong, Clove, and Gun Oil, refining their ability to locate and indicate scent with accuracy.

Once you’ve completed a beginner course, you can move into our Cadets classes, where skills are developed further and searches become more complex. From there, opportunities open up to take part in trials, assessments, or join our environmental searches in a range of different settings.

Throughout, the focus remains on building confident, capable dogs who enjoy the process and work in partnership with their handler.

Scent Games

Scent games are a great way to introduce your dog to the world of scent work in a relaxed and accessible way.

These sessions are built around a variety of activities, from simple searches for food and toys through to structured games such as match to sample and catnip retrieve. Many of these games tap into your dog’s natural instincts—such as retrieving, hunting, and searching—giving them a rewarding outlet for behaviours they’re already wired to enjoy.

They encourage dogs to use their noses, think independently, and build confidence, all while working alongside their handler.

No previous experience is needed, making these classes ideal for beginners or for anyone looking to add a bit of variety and enrichment into their dog’s routine.

Whether you’re just starting out or simply looking for something different to do together, scent games offer an easy way to engage your dog’s brain and build your connection at the same time.

Track Trail

Tracking and trailing take scent work out into the natural environment, allowing dogs to follow scent in a way that closely mirrors their instincts.

We begin with woodland tracking, teaching dogs to follow a short ground trail while building focus, confidence, and an understanding of how scent behaves. As skills develop, trails become longer and more complex, encouraging dogs to work with increasing independence.

From there, many teams progress into human trailing—following the scent left behind by a person—and eventually into scent ID work, where dogs learn to identify and follow the correct trail among multiple options.

These sessions are a great way to give dogs a meaningful outlet for both body and mind, combining movement, problem-solving, and teamwork in a natural, engaging setting. And as a bonus, the humans tend to get their steps in too—so tired legs all round.

If you’re interested in joining the trail, book onto a woodland tracking session or get in touch.
